Maine Acupuncture Licensing
Acupuncture is regulated by the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Office of Licensing and Registration.
Candidates for licensure must be at least 21 years old, hold a Baccalaureate Degree, meet requirements for 1000 acupuncture classroom and 300 acupuncture clinic hours, and obtain NCCAOM (National Certifying Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) certification.
In addition, licensed acupuncturists must complete 30 credits of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in every two-year license renewal cycle.
To obtain NCCAOM certification, the candidate must have graduated from an ACAOM (Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) certified school. This requirement includes a minimum, three year program, with at least 1905 total hours (105 credits), including 705 hours of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture theory, 660 hours of Practical Clinic, 450 hours of Biomedicine and 90 hours of Counseling, Communications, Ethics, and Practice Management. A Clean Needle Technique course is also required. Finally a candidate must pass the three NCCAOM board exams which cover Foundations of Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture with Point Location and [Western] Biomedicine.
To maintain NCCAOM certification, a Diplomat must obtain 60 hours of Professional Development Activities (similar to CEUs) and complete an Ethics class and a CPR class in every four-year recertification cycle.
